Speak Māori

What can you do to breathe new life into our language?

You can contribute to revitalising the language by learning to speak Māori in one of our community-based classes in a region near you.  Using the language in all situations, especially the home and between generations, is required for the survival of reo Māori as a living language.

Community-based classes

Community-based classes are informal classes run in various locations throughout the country.  The focus is on speaking Māori in a supportive environment.  Everyone learns together at the same pace.

You can learn to speak Māori with confidence in a fun and non-threatening manner.  Te Ataarangi is best known for its use of Cuisenaire rods (rākau) in an immersion environment.  It's an effective method that works.

Whether you have absolutely no experience of Māori language, or want to increase your fluency, you'll be amazed at how quickly you'll learn to speak with confidence.

Eight great reasons to learn with Te Ataarangi:

  1. It suits people from all walks of life, all cultures and of any age.
  2. Our emphasis is on listening, looking and speaking.
  3. You learn about Māori culture and customs along with the language.
  4. We have classes nationwide, with a range of levels and times.
  5. Te Ataarangi have a proven record with over 30 years of experience.
  6. You start speaking from the beginning.
  7. We provide a supportive learning environment.
  8. It's fun and it works.

Community-based classes receive limited or no funding, therefore a fee may be charged.
